Scientific assistant HISTORICAL DATA QUALITY CONTROL

 

The Scientific Service “Meteorological and Climatological Information” of the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) invites applications for a scientific assistant in its Climatology Unit. The candidate will be involved in the development of high quality historical time series of observations for various meteorological parameters. His tasks will in particular include a statistical analysis of the observations stored in the RMI central database since at least 1985 (e.g. to highlight gaps and misleading values), the derivation of high quality time series as well as the compilation of related metadata. The resulting time series will finally be made available to external users through the RMI open data portal.

 

The position is open for a fixed term contract of 18 months. The salary will be fixed in accordance to the official Belgian public employee pay scale SW10 or SW11 (depending on experience).

 

Qualifications:

  • Master degree in natural sciences, environmental science or engineering.
  • Experience in scientific programming for data analysis (ideally with R).
  • Familiar with Unix/Linux environment.
  • Background in meteorology/climatology and statistics.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is a plus, knowledge of French and/or Dutch is required.
