Vacancy SW1 Data Scientist for the Belgian Climate Centre and the ‘Meteorological and Climatological Information’ service

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) is a federal scientific institute that provides weather and climate services and carries out research in the fields of meteorology and climate. As part of its mission, it provides the public, the authorities and businesses with climate information for the whole of Belgium, based on validated observations from several measurement networks. The Meteorological and Climatological Information Service is responsible for these specific activities. At the same time, the Belgian Climate Centre plays a role in coordinating and transferring knowledge about climate-related Belgian scientific research. The common objective of these two services is to provide high-quality historical climate data that will enable us to assess the changes that have taken place in the past and monitor their evolution in near-real time.

These two services are looking to recruit an enthusiastic scientist whose key task will be to produce homogenized climatological series of temperature and precipitation over the whole of Belgium since measurements began at the RMI.

- Extending the existing homogenised series at monthly scale on the basis of various homogenization tools in collaboration with the members of the Meteorological and Climatological Information service.

- Studying the possibility of developing homogeneous daily series and/or representative regional series for Belgium.

- Coordinating the transfer of data to (and facilitating the exchange of information between) the Belgian Climate Centre, the Meteorological and Climatological Information Service and the various departments involved.

- Supporting the administrative tasks related to the position.
