Master & PhD projects
Master and PhD thesis projects can be proposed related to the main research themes of the Dynamical Meteorology and Climatology Unit, i.e. the variability and predictability of the atmosphere and climate. We are currently interested in:
- the understanding of the development of the low-frequency variability that could potentially allow us to perform long term forecasts at seasonal, interannual or decadal time scale;
- the causal relationships between the subsystems and variables of the Earth's climate system;
- the occurence of intermittency at various timescales in in Earth's meteorology and climate.
These research themes are addressed through the analysis of a hierarchy of weather and climate models and datasets, using tools from nonlinear science and stochastic process theories.
The following is a non-exhaustive list of research questions currently offered to Master students:
- Study of the intermittency found in various climate models (contact: Jonathan Demaeyer)
- Existence and occurence of low-frequency variability in the MAOOAM model (contact: Jonathan Demaeyer)
- Development of low-order climate models for the Tropical Pacific region (contact: Jonathan Demaeyer)
- Cause-effect relationships between the AMOC and Arctic sea ice, including tipping points (contact: David Docquier)
- Impacts of Arctic sea ice on the Northern Hemisphere climate (contact: David Docquier).
