Protection of personal data

This information is about the protection of your personal data. These are the data with which you can be identified direct or indirect: Your first name, family name, email address, IP-address,…

We collect personal data, when:

  • You surf on the webpages of the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI). In your browser they start with “https://www.meteo.be“. If a link takes you to another website, portal site, online application or social network, then the terms and conditions for the processing of personal data is from these services;
  • You contact us.

You are protected on the basis of:

  • the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.
  1. Legal basis and purposes of the processing operations:

    We collect and process personal data, in order to:

    • inform you;
    • answer your questions;
    • handle the files that concern you.

    We also collect and process data:

    • for statistical and qualitative purposes, in order to improve our services;
    • to give you an answer in your language.

    If your request for information or services is meant for another administration, we will give you the details of that administration. You are free to contact them.

  2. Processed data:

    Personal data is automatically collected and processed in these two situations:

    Exchange from emails via the contact form or via message transfer.

    Metadata that might be connected with your email.

    Other personal data that can be processed are recorded in the data processing register.

    Data that are not personal are automatically collected without a link to your IP address and thus with respect for your anonymity. They are used to generate statistics and to improve the content of the portal site:

    • language choice;
    • used search engine;
    • used keywords;
    • website through which you came;
    • consulted pages;
    • consulting time per pages;
    • list of downloaded files
    • date and time of your access;
    • used browser;
    • platform and operating system installed on your computer;
  3. Use of cookies:

    Cookies are small information files that are automatically stored on the hard drive of your computer when you visit a website that contains a unique identification number.

    These cookies make it easier for the user to visit the website and to surf on that website. They also ensure that the speed and user efficiency of the website increase. They are also mean to adapt the website to your personal preferences. Cookies also allow to analyze the use of a website with the aim of identifying and solving any problems.

    The configuration of most browsers offers you the opportunity to accept or reject cookies and to inform you every time a cookie is used. You can refuse cookies, although this may affect an optimal browsing experience and the functionalities of the services offered on the website. You can find more information in the help function of your browser. At the end of a user session, all assigned cookies are automatically deleted.

    The website of the RMI uses cookies to save your preferences. Your language choice (local), last visited municipality () and the list of favorites with municipalities () are stored in a cookie. To gain an insight into the user statistics, we use Google Analytics cookies.

  4. Storage time:

    The data is retained for a duration that is no longer than necessary for the purposes for which the personal data are processed.

    In exceptional cases, as for example court proceedings, your personal data can be stored longer.

  5. Security:

    The RMI guarantees the security (integrity and confidentiality) of your personal data. It is protected against unauthorized access, illegal use, loss and unauthorized modifications.

    We use security techniques and procedures that we do not describe in detail here for safety reasons.

    On a physical, technical and organizational level, appropriate measures are taken to ensure a level of safety that is adapted to the risks.

  6. Right of insight, Rectification, Explanation of the handling, complaint and deleting:

    You have certain rights for the personal data we use: the right of access, the right to rectification, the right to disagree and the right to have data deleted.

    We handle your request within 30 calendar days. If your request is complex or our services have to process a lot of requests, the term is extended to 60 days.

    To exercise your rights, send an e-mail or a letter to our data protection officer, along with a scan or a copy of your ID, with your signature on it.
